Community Events

APCH is a community hub and gathering place for interaction with our constituents and other stakeholders, including local government officials and community based organizations. APCH hosts town hall meetings, candidates’ debates, and is a polling place. Our Marion Brucker Community Auditorium (aka the Bridge Theater) and W.M. Keck Foundation Gallery are regularly in use for open mics, cultural and performing arts events and ongoing displays from the prolific young artists in our Art Dept.

In support of our broader community, every year we host an array of service, education, civics and distribution events.

For sponsorship opportunities, contact Gilbert Radillo at [email protected] or (323) 238-2416.

SPRING

Health & Garden Expo

May 2, 2020

Our neighborhood is a food desert that suffers from a lack of grocery stores, farmers markets and healthy restaurants. APCH provides not only groceries to families in need, but also gardens and lessons in gardening, nutrition and cooking.

For HAGE, we close down a portion of 29th Street next to APCH and fill the street with entertaining and engaging opportunities for families and the whole community to have fun while trying out healthy recipes, learning how to grow their own food, and receiving free health check-ups, including vision, dental, blood pressure and diabetes exams.

Cinderella & Prince Charming Project

April 18, 2020

Young people in our neighborhood can’t take anything for granted. That includes being able to afford the costs associated with Homecoming, Prom, and Graduation. AT APCH, we ensure those rites of passage are special and memorable for more than 1,200 Los Angeles teenagers every year.

Each spring, the Cinderella & Prince Charming Project provides teens with formal attire necessary to look and feel their best for special occasions. Teens also participated in fun and informative financial, fashion and self-esteem workshops presented by special guests, and even had opportunities to sign up to volunteer at APCH.

A Place Called Home begins accepting formal-wear every January. New or gently used* items include gowns, dresses, suits, tuxedos, men’s shirts, women’s suits, ties, belts, men’s and women’s shoes, purses, jewelry, cosmetics and other accessories.

*Don’t forget to dry clean and press used clothing before you donate – let’s treat the kids like royalty!

SUMMER

Family Movie Nights

Friday nights in the summer – dates TBA.

In a neighborhood where there are no movie theaters and the cost to take a family to a movie in another neighborhood is prohibitive, we provide several outdoor evening screenings throughout the summer, with seats and blanket space on our athletic field. The teens sell pizza and popcorn to raise funds for special projects, and mom and dad finally get an evening to relax and enjoy themselves under the stars. The films are always family friendly and include Spanish subtitles so all our guests can enjoy them fully. Often, the feature film is preceded by shorts made by students in our very own Digital Media program!

FALL

Backpack to School Event

Takes place the first Saturday in August.

For many families in our community, sending the kids back to school is stressful because they can’t afford to purchase all the necessary supplies and tools to be ready for that first day. What really helps a youngster feel ready is knowing that they will be equipped and stylin’!

APCH welcomes students of all ages and we provide more than 1,000 new backpacks full of school supplies and books, as well as sundries like sunglasses, personal hygiene kits, meal coupons, and more. We even provide eye exams and prescription glasses.

Thanksgiving

November 25

Help make Thanksgiving a reality for families in need by donating to A Place Called Home’s annual Thanksgiving Turkey and Food Distribution Drive. On November 25, 2020 we will deliver bags of fresh produce, thanksgiving meal ingredients and a turkey to help bring families together to the table for a joyous meal. It’s a simple act to many of us, but not for everyone in our community. In previous year’s,  we would have hosted a dinner at our center for everyone to partake, and since this year looks a bit different it is important for us to make sure they are not short of anything but thankful.

Family to Family

December 16th Delivery

You are invited to participate in APCH’s Family-to-Family Program (formerly known as Adopt-a-Family). In the face of the COVID-19 crisis, APCH quickly mobilized to respond to urgent and ongoing needs of youth and families that were already struggling with the challenges of poverty. As we head into what will likely be a long-term economic crisis, our families need APCH nor more than ever, and APCH needs you!
This year, we plan to match your family to an APCH member family in need to help bring smiles and joy during the holidays.
Opportunities are limited and will be assigned on a first come served basis.
