In a culture that has largely turned children off to reading, our commitment to improving literacy through reading aloud, book clubs, poetry writing classes and more, fosters appreciation for the written word and the power of the imagination!
APCH promotes reading and literacy at home by gifting books to every member of APCH, thanks to ongoing support from the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation.
We offer regular explorations into hands-on science, for which each member keeps a written journal of experiments.
Students rarely receive the type of one-on-one attention at school that they get at APCH. Every week hundreds of students from elementary grades through high school receive individual and group homework assistance from program instructors, tutors and volunteers, most of whom are bilingual in Spanish and English. Additional academic activities for members include reading aloud, group reading/book clubs, lessons in phonetics, and engagement with a variety of classroom tools that promote literacy.
Our tutoring program covers math, science and English and promotes critical thinking skills that help students complete their homework, while building toward capacity for independent study and sustained academic success.
Homework help and tutoring are great areas to volunteer!
