APCH has strong ties to more than a dozen community schools and we are aware when our members are struggling academically. Our comprehensive Academic Focus program allows us to measure a child’s performance and development. We collect report cards, exams, assessment tools, surveys, anecdotes, and first-person statements in order to provide individualized attention and support for students that are struggling at school.
Students participating in Academic Focus are required to attend at least one hour per day, four days a week, and have their assignments reviewed before they participate in other APCH activities.
It’s tough to learn when you don’t have the supplies you need to succeed in school. At our annual Back to School Fest, APCH gives our members and other community youth access to school supplies, books, computers, backpacks, and other resources for the classroom. We even provide free eye exams and prescription glasses (thanks to a partnership with Vision to Learn). Our computer lab and extensive lending library are available to all members.
Let’s get creative! Some of the best learning experiences aren’t part of a regular school curriculum. AT APCH students regularly hear guest speakers and participate in enriching and educational field trips to museums, performances, nature settings, and culturally stimulating experiences. We encourage students to view education with open minds, and find personal connections and inspiration that will improve their study habits, build their confidence, strengthen their focus, and enhance their interest in learning across all disciplines.
APCH is always on the lookout for ways to maximize resources for our educational services through partnerships with other youth-serving and educational agencies in Los Angeles.
